How to Find Exactly What You’re Looking for, Using Top Search Engines

Meta Search Engines and Mobile Search Engines

Back in the early 90s, there were barely any people using the Internet. The World Wide Web was just at its inception. If you wanted to read the news or find some information, you just had to go to the bookstore or newspaper stand. But nowadays, it’s all about digitalization. We can find out everything, anytime, using just a few clicks. This is one of the rare cases when it doesn’t sound too good to be true – it’s just that simple. Well, almost. While the Internet is an incredible resource, you have to use the top search engines to get the results that you want.

Whenever we speak about top search engines, Google is the first one that comes to mind, although surprisingly, there was a time when Ask Jeeves was surpassing it. Ask Jeeves had a better interface and a better grouping of the results, breaking them down into categories like news, images or videos. Until recently, Google didn’t have this functionality, showing just plain website results. Basically, it just took bits and pieces from other search engines and made improved versions of those options.

Now, Google has a left panel breaking into various categories, like news, images and videos for our searched term. If we want to read certain news in a different language, we just have to adjust the settings accordingly. However, despite these upgrades, Ask Jeeves still has something that Google doesn’t: it shows results from the shopping websites regarding the term we want to find more about, which is a useful addition for those who look for certain movies, searching by the actor’s name.

Yahoo! is one of the top search engines too, because of its complex, but not too complicated structure. You have the possibility to search for various terms and have the results shown all together or categorized under news, images, videos, local, shopping, sports and blogs, just to mention a few. The variety of the categories makes Yahoo! a standout among other top search engines.

For those more interested in searching images of their favorite stars for example, Bing is worth trying, since it displays a lot more picture results than Google does and as Google, the results can be shown according to color and size preferences. If we speak about images, TinEye has to be mentioned. It used to being the best reverse image search engine, but now because of Google, it’s just one of the top search engines in terms of images. What it does that instead of searching for an image, it gives you the possibility to upload your own image and detect its source. Now Google has the same feature, being able to find the same image in a higher resolution, if available and provide information for it.

There are plenty of search engines to choose from. In the end, the Internet is a place where you can find anything; it’s up to you to decide how to find it.
